Cell Culture Lab

The Cell Culture Laboratory in ChemSci S012 is a Biosafety Level 1/Biosafety Level 2 facility. (View the Safety Inspection Report.) It is dedicated to cell work only. No bacterial or viral work is allowed! All cell transfections, tissue fixations and other cell/tissue manipulations should be done outside the facility.

Up to 4 h sign-ups are allowed for a Biosafety Cabinet.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and all necessary supplies to conduct experiments must be brought in by the user. The Cell Culture Lab provides space and instrumentation.

Users are expected to have sufficient training in:

  • Cell culture preparation
  • The use of a Biological Safety Cabinet (Cole-Parmer A2 Class)
  • The use of an autoclave
  • Biosafety Level 2 procedures and practices

In addition, users must adhere to all standard operating procedures listed for this lab, including those for safety and cleanliness.


Access to the Cell Culture Laboratory is limited to confocal facility users.


There is no charge for sample preparation in the Cell Culture Lab, including use of the Biological Safety Cabinet or Biosafety Cabinet (BSC).


Users MUST RESERVE the Cell Culture Lab facilities prior to using a Biosafety Cabinet.

  1. Users MUST FILL OUT the log-book dedicated for the usage of Biosafety Cabinet.
  2. Users must review and follow the general Safety and Cleanliness requirements for the Confocal Imaging Lab and the Cell Culture Lab.
  3. Users MUST follow all specific safety and cleanliness guidelines below related to the Standard Operating Procedures within the Cell Culture Lab.
  4. Upon request users can be assigned storage place for gloves, lab-coats and other supplies. (Contact: Dr. Marina Tanasova, mtanasov@mtu.edu)
  5. Failure to comply with all reservation, safety and cleanliness guidelines may result in cancellation of the access to the Cell Culture Laboratory.

iii. Safety Checklist

  1.  Label all reagents and samples stored in common areas. Unlabeled samples will be thrown away during weekly lab clean-up.
  2. Spills and other emergency situations MUST be handled according to the Incident Response SOP.

iv. Disposal Checklist

  1. All waste must be properly placed into the biosafety waste container. Containers are provided and will be cleaned weekly.
  2. If a user generates a lot of waste and fills out the container, they should remove the full plastic back from the container, seal it, and place a new bag into the waste container. Bags are located at the bottom of the waste container.
  3. Sharps, such as needles, scalpels, pipettes, and broken glassware, must be placed in the appropriate designated containers.

v. Cleaning Checklist

  1. Clean the internal surface of the Biosafety Cabinet with a 70% Ethanol/water solution. Bottles with the pre-mixed solutions are available. Please refill bottles upon usage. Ethanol and distilled water are available in the lab.
  2. Users must wash their hands after working with potentially hazardous materials and before leaving the laboratory.
  3. Use an appropriate disinfectant to clean work surfaces after completion of work and after any spill or splash of potentially infectious material.
  4. Use bleach or an autoclave to decontaminate all cultures, stocks, and other potentially infectious materials before disposal.
